South Florida Company May Have an Answer to the Challenge of the Uninsured,
Quality Preventive Care at ONE-THIRD the Cost of Traditional Coverage
One small South Florida health care company may have an answer to what has become one of the country’s most pressing issues, the exploding cost of health care coverage. The issue has forced over 48 million Americans off health insurance rolls (including 19% of Floridians) and has spurred both Massachusetts and California to craft their own universal coverage plans. In Florida, House Speaker Marco Rubio’s (R-West Miami) had put forth 100 Innovative Ideas which includes a focus on access to care as well as preventive and affordable health care. Speaker Rubio’s House Health Care Council recently had Care Access Health Plan’s President testify before it about their unique approach to solving the uninsured crisis.
Care Access Health Plan, a privately held South Florida-based health plan offers its innovative approach to lower premiums by un-bundling the critical front-end of preventive health care coverage… that is the everyday routine care you get at your doctor’s office and the comprehensive care you get from specialists…from the more expensive catastrophic hospital coverage. Typically, those without medical insurance are forced to use the emergency room as their entry point to health care. By making preventive care affordable, with no deductibles, Care Access allows the individual to go to the doctor regularly and avoid the costly trip to the ER. The goal is simple: keep people healthy and out of expensive hospitals and emergency rooms.
Care Access was begun with a corporate mission of targeting the uninsured and underinsured in South Florida; a market not previously looked at by major insurance carriers. With its new approach to selling health care coverage Care Access Health Plan provides an affordable answer to the crisis of the uninsured with a high-quality alternative to typical health care plans at a fraction of the cost. With coverage - including prescription drug coverage - that starts at $59 per month, Care Access unlocks the door to quality health insurance for the uninsured and underinsured.
Care Access was incorporated in South Florida in part due to South Florida being home to one the largest populations of uninsured. The Florida Health Insurance Study, commissioned by the State of Florida and conducted by the University of Florida in 2004, revealed that more than 2.8 million people (about 19.2% of state’s population) did not have health insurance. In the study, Miami-Dade County was identified as having the highest rate of uninsured in the state at 28.7%.
Care Access has had some recent success in getting their message out to cover those employees currently uninsured. They recently signed agreements with the Miami-Dade County School Board, Miami Dade College, and Florida International University, to cover their previously uninsured part-time and temporary employees.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to work with the part-time and temporary employees from Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College, and Florida International University to offer them previously unavailable health care coverage at affordable rates,” said Jerry Sternstein, President. “We want to commend the administrations at these fine institutions that looked at the issue of the uninsured and found a way to provide affordable health care coverage affordable. The signing of these fine groups shows the growing need for affordable, quality health care coverage,” he said.
